Food that I love

While most of what I cook, especially for daily meals, is created by my own little brain, I do borrow from many other people.  Below are some of my favorite inspirations.

Isa Chandra Moskowitz, who is the mind behind Post Punk Kitchen, is one of my favorite vegan cookbook authors.  While we do not keep strictly vegan, she has a lot of great short cuts and her recipes are easily adapted, and she writes like she is personally explaining how to make something.  Also, the cookbooks have fabulous titles that make me happy.

Rachel Allen is a wonderful Irish chef who has a show on PBS' Create Channel.  You can find her website here.  For Christmas Eve Eve, I made the Yule log from the recipe section of her website and the macaroni and cheese from the downloadable recipes associated with her PBS show.

My current baking bible is Joanne Chang's Flour, which is named after her Boston bakery.  She is getting ready to release another cookbook as well, which has me totally psyched.  However, as I try to shop as local as possible, I am not pre-ordering through the big online retailers and will purchase it from a local shop where I picked up the first.

For those exploring vegetarianism (or who just want more meatless meals in their diet), I suggest a subscription to the Vegetarian Times.  I started subscribing about three years ago, before our conversion, and have found it to be a useful tool.  If you are not ready for the plunge into subscription, the website is very helpful as well, but the search leaves something to be desired.

As a little bit of a geek, I must admit that I adore Mayim Bialik and her blog on Kveller.  On the Kveller site, there is a recipe area that I have fallen in love with, and I highly recommend the Apple & Honey Whole Wheat Sandwich Loaf.  Mayim will also be publishing a vegan cookbook in the New Year as well, which has me super stoked.

Finally, I searched for years to find something to replace my go to Betty Crocker cookbook, which is full of heavy meals and meat filled dishes.  By pure chance, at a book store on a random day, I found Rose Elliot's New Complete Vegetarian and fell in love with it.  It is a go-to every day cookbook, and many of the recipes are easily adaptable as well.
